Helpful Tips For Dogs

1. Problem: Dry skin

If there is no underlying skin disorder or illness, try the following;

A. Start adding a good quality vegetable oil in dog's food;  once per-day. Start by adding 1-2 tablespoons of oil to food. Then, every other day, add a tablespoon of additional oil until the dog's stool looks soft.  Then, reduce this by one tablespoon and this would be your standard daily dose. This will add the necessary oil to the dog's coat.

 B. Don't over bathe your dog, as this can strip the natural oils from their coat. Give baths no more than twice per-month, unless they become soiled or smell, then just use a good shampoo. Use what you use, yourself .

C. Feed a good quality food.

2. Problem: Foul Breath

A. Have your Vet check your dog's teeth for underlying decay and have him show you how to clean their teeth on a regular basis.

B. Get your dog their own tooth brush and use it on a regular basis and use a good tooth paste.

C. Get your dog chewing baked biscuit bones, such as milk bone dog biscuits, for  example.  Also, you can use rawhide bones but only when you're monitoring the dog. Don't leave it with them if you're not watching, as you don't want the dog to swallow a large hunk of rawhide, because, in very small numbers of cases, it can cause intestinal blockages.

3. Problem: Dog has been sprayed by a Skunk

When this occurs, you have a really fun job ahead of you. The best thing to date to kill the smell of skunk is tomato juice, as this will neutralize the odor. You will have to bathe the dog with the juice and work it into the coat completely, and let it sit 15- 20 minutes then wash out, and repeat till smell is gone. Then give the dog a normal bath with your favorite shampoo.

4. Dealing with the odor of a bitch in heat.

One thing that will help reduce the odor that they produce, is chlorophyll it can be found in most drugs stores as no odor but the best thing to do is ask your pharmacist  for oral tablets that have chlorophyll. These can be given 1 or 2 per day to help control odor internally before it is produced.

This will not cover all the odor produced by a bitch in heat but will help some for sure.

5. Excessive Barking.

If you have a dog that will not stop barking on your command here is a little trick that might help you. Get your self a container of reconstituted lemon juice like the one you see in the little lemon in the grocery store.

The next time your dog barks, give the command to stop and if they don't spray a little of into their mouths this usually works very well after a couple of times of applying this technique.

On very persistent barker you may have to move to other means.

The next thing you can try is time out like you do with a child. Place the dog in a crate in an area with no stimuli. This also works fairly well.

I have tried the noise producing products on the market but found them of little use with a dog that is a persistence  barker.

Most people don't like to use shock collars and I only like to see them used when other means have been tried.

The course of last resort.

Having the dog debarked by your vet. This is not a surgical procedure to be taken lightly . This is why you must chose a good vet. one that does surgery on a regular basis. One of the reasons that this is a difficult surgery is due to two main reasons.

 A. Is when you place a dog under for the surgery you must have a airway  in place to properly ventilate the dog and this runs right through the same area that you have to perform surgery on.

B. Is this is a highly vascular area so bleeding is a possible.  So only use this as an absolute last resort.

Also in Ohio legislation is coming to a vote where it would be a felony to have your dog debarked.

6. How To Select A Good Veterinarian

скидки

Like all medical professionals, veterinarians must undergo many years of tough  schooling.  They must pass a rigorous state licensing examination in order to practice veterinary medicine.  However, once licensed, each doctor's future development varies considerably .    Some veterinarians remain generalists treating all kinds of problems in several species of animals.  Some restrict their interests to one or two species , while others narrow their goals to a specialty practice.  Example, surgery, dermatology , or ophthalmology.  Specialists are relatively new to veterinary medicine and are most often found in teaching hospitals or large practices in an urban area.  Veterinarians often work together for the best interest of their patients; so don't be surprised if your refers you to a colleague who has more expertise or more complete facilities for handing your pet's specific problem.  Although this type of treatment will be more expensive, referral is a reflection of your veterinarian's concern for your pet.

There are several ways to get recommendations concerning the veterinary service in your area. Get a variety of opinions by asking neighbors, other pet owners, breeders, and members of the local kennel clubs, or call the local veterinary society.  Use the following guide-lines to help find the veterinarian that will best meet your needs.

In selecting someone to care for your pet's health and medical problems, he or she should

  1. A.  Be a licensed veterinarian
  2.
  3. B.  Have a clean, modern, well-kept facility to treat your species of pet.  The  location should be convenient to you.
  4.
  5. C. Enjoy caring for your species of pet.
  6.
  7. D. Provide coverage for emergencies

In addition, the following items may indicate a potential for superior care.

  • A.  The hospital provides complete laboratory, surgical , and radiological services on the premises.
  •
  • B.  The hospital has been inspected and listed as approved by a state or national organization.  However, some excellent hospitals have not been approved, since this is a new, voluntary program.
  •
  • C.  The professional staff keep up with medical advance by frequent attendance of continuing-education courses.
  •
  • D.  The individual veterinarian is board-certified in a specialty area ( such as internal medicine or surgery ).   Almost all veterinarians belong to their local and national professional associations.

Some personal items should enter into your decision.

  • A.  Is your veterinarian available to you when you pet has a problem?
  •
  • B.  Are your personal concerns satisfied?
  •
  • C.  Does the personality of your veterinarian mesh with yours?
  •
  • D.  Are the professional charges acceptable to you?

If you can respond favorably to most of the above criteria, you have found your veterinarian.  Trust him or her and follow the advice carefully. However, don't expect the impossible. Remember that pets are relatively short- lived and that many disease are incurable.  In some cases, continued treatment may not be a kindness to your or to your pet.  Your veterinarian can be a sympathetic source of strength and a good friend, too.

7 Reporting Problems with medications can help drug makers ascertain their true safety ( from The Whole Dog Journal  aug. 2000 )

All too often, dog owners regard

their pet's bad reaction to a

medicine or a topical preparation

as an isolated incident.  Usually,

both the dog owner and the

veterinarian are so concerned

with treating the individual,

it never occurs to them to report

the incident to either the drugs

manufacturer or the FDA. But drug

companies ( and their Federal

regulators ) need feedback from the

ultimate " test population "- our

dogs- to ensure continued

refinement and development of

safe drugs.

If your dog becomes sick, or

worsens after taking or being exposed to any drug, immediately take your dog to your veterinarian,  and ask them to report your dog's reaction to the drug maker and the FDA.  Sometimes the drug manufactures are already aware of certain problems that may occur,

and can discuss suggested courses

of testing and /or treatment with your veterinarian.

Dog owners need not depend on the bet to do this, however. Anyone can report suspected drug reactions to the FDA by calling

Helpful Tips For Windows 98

 1. Wallpaper:

When you place an image for wallpaper, first place image in my documents and keep it there, as windows active desk top will drop images used for wallpaper every so often. Placing  the image in my documents stops this from occurring.

 2.Emergency boot disk:

Always make an Emergency boot disk. To do this, click on start, settings, control panel, click on add/ remove programs.  Next, click on start up disk file tab and place a blank, formatted, 3Ѕ floppy disk.  Know normal as your A drive- click on create disc.  Now windows will make you an emergency disk. Keep this disk handy, as it will allow you to boot your computer and get it running, if windows has a problem. It's not if it has a problem, it's only a matter of time till you will have a problem and will need this disk.

3. Defregmenting Hard Drive Windows 98 maintenance:

Defragment your hard drive every couple of weeks to keep computer running in top performance.  Use Scan disk every week, and it would also be a good idea just after you do this, to run file checker.

Defragment your hard drive- you want all programs shut down, especially your virus scan software. To defrag do the following, start, programs, accessories, system tools, and click on defragmenter.  Select drive box comes up.  Select the drive you wish to Defragment, then click on settings, make sure there's a check mark place in rearrange program files, so my programs start faster.  Also, make sure there is a check mark in, check drive for errors. Under I want to use these options, have a mark in radio button, every time I defragment my hard drive, OK and click OK again in the select drive box and the defragmentation should start.

4. File Checker:

To run: click on start, programs, accessories,  system tools, system information, click on tool menu, and click on system file checker.

This is one of the very first areas to check if you are having trouble with the operating system. It will check for corrupt files and will prompt you to insert you Window 98 CD-disk in to the CD-rom  and point the file checker to the correct location on the disk.  Sometimes, it take a real search to find the files.

If having trouble locating a file, use find files and folder. This can be found by going to-start, find, find files or folders and type in the file you are looking for. Sometimes it helps to check where it is on the hard drive as some times it will point you in the right direction where to look on the CD-rom. Other times you may have to use a disk other than Windows 98; you might have to use Microsoft Office if it is installed.  File checker will also look for deleted or change files as well.

5.Window Bugs

Several good Web site to help  with any bugs you might have.

http://www.spanbauer.com/bugs.htm

http://www.bugnet.com

http://www.microsoft.com/support

6. Browser Security

Explorer is know to have many security hole in it's programming. This makes it very important that you visit the Microsoft Windows 98 update site.

They easiest way to access this site, is the following. One start your internet services. Two click on the start button on your task bar, then go to the top of the menu and click on Windows update.

This will take you to the Microsoft update site. When you arrive at the web page look for product updates on the right side of the page and click on it.

A dialog box will come up and state that it is searching for your updates and then will show which updates that are available for your computer.  There is another tab on the top and to the left that will show your installed updates, know as history.

At time Windows will tell you a certain update needs to be reloaded due to some internal error and this is where you would come to do that.

The area I have seen this most is in the system utility where there is an  Active X trouble shooter and when I have had problems this will tell you if Active X needs to be reinstalled.

Be sure to go to this update site on a regular basis as they are finding new security problems with Explorer on a fairly regular basis.

Anytime a browser has security problems you need to update as soon as a patch becomes available. You don't want someone on the Internet taking over your computer with out your knowledge. This is easier than you might think.

There are people on the net probing looking forcomputer ports on your and ever one else's that they can get access to on a regular basis. Further you don't even know their doing it.

There is a very good program out there called  Black Ice.This program will tell you when people are trying to probe your ports, on your computer. This program will also allow you to block all such attempts further it will make it so your computer ports don't show up on the net all for all intensive purposes you are invisible to hacker when your on the net. This is know as a software firewall.

This becomes even more important if you have DSL or Cable internet connections as these are always on. Not that your safe with a dial up connection but most ISP assign you a new IP address each time you sign on make it a little more difficult for hackers, but don't take that for granted . Cable and DSL you have the same IP address all the time , this is what hackers are looking for.

What you need to realize is the protocol that allow your computer to talk to other computers { TCP/IP } and access the internet is also the same protocol that hacker use to access your computer. This is even more important if you have a network set up that is also using file and printer sharing. Be sure to set up your file and print sharing up on another type of protocol, say NetBEUI and make sure that file and print sharing is not allowed on TCP/IP also make sure when you set up the drives you share on your network that in the property tab on sharing that you make sure that INTERNET sharing is not have a check mark in it. TCP/IP as this is another area that hacker can exploit.

A great web site to check out is Gibson Research . click on Gibson and be taken to their site. The have a program that will probe your computer and show you howyour system is to attack. This is also good to check your Black Ice. installation. If Black Ice. is working correctly when Gibson probes your ports they will all come back listed as Stealth.

As this is to small an area to cover such an important subject the other web site you should check as well for security is www.Zdnet.com and www.Cnet.com  and search for what they have on browser and computer security.

7. Tweak UI

What Is It?

It's a collection of tweaks to

the Windows registry. Since

screwing around directly with

the registry can have a detrimental

effect on your OS, this handy

interface allows you to tinker

without much risk.

The Microsoft® Windows® Shell

Development Team has put

together a set of productivity

tools called PowerToys. If you're

a Windows power-user, go ahead

and try them out, but realize these

are unsupported tools. Microsoft

Technical Support is unable to

answer questions about PowerToys.

System Requirements
Windows 2000, Windows

NT, Windows Millennium Edition,

Windows 98 or Windows 95.

Purchase Price: $0
Operating System: Windows
Ease of Use: Fairly easy to use

Below I will review each tab and

briefly explain each, only going into

more detail on the tabs that I've found

to be useful.

Why Isn't It Pre-Installed

If It's So Great?

My feeling is that Microsoft wants

to keep as many cool tools as

possible away from people who

may accidentally change settings.

This is why Tweak UI is not pre-

installed on either version of Windows.

Bill knows what's best for us! ;)

Installation

With Win 95 it's available for

download at the Microsoft site.

For Win 98, it can be found on

your install CD in the

D:\tools\reskit\powertoy

folder. Replace "D:" for your

CD Drive letter.  It is not

on the Windows

98 Second Edition CD.

Browse either by Windows

Explorer or by using the "Browse

This CD" feature after

auto-starting Win 98.

Find the file tweak.inf, right click

to bring up the menu and choose

"Install".

Ok It's Installed. Now What?

After it completes its install go

to the Windows Control Panel

and double-click the Tweak

UI icon and let the fun begin.

Mouse

Not only tweaks for the mouse

but for menu speed. Adjusting

menu speed will cause the "Fly-out"

menus to, well, fly-out faster or slower.

This is not very useful but fun to play

with.

Double click and drag speed. Playing

with settings can control the timing of

your clicks so Windows can determine

what is a double click and what is not.

A control similar to this

is already included in the mouse

control panel.

Drag speed controls helps Windows

determine the timing from when you

actually click on an icon or file and

when it starts dragging that item.

Another feature I found to be useless.

General

Scrolling through these you'll find

controls for Windows animation,

sounds on errors, and other various

visual and audio effects.

It's also possible to change the

default location for folders such

as "Recent", "Start Up", "My

Documents", and other folders

I wouldn't mess with.

Explorer

Change shortcut arrows, stop

that annoying "Click Here To Begin"

and a few other tweaks not worth

mentioning.

IE4

Most are options related to IE such

as clear typed URL on exit. This is

useful if you don't want anyone prying

into your browser and looking at your

previous visits. This is separate from

the History of visited URL's because it

just wipes out just URL's type in the

address bar.

Show Documents and Favorites on

Start Menu, is another one of them

paranoid "someone's watching me"

settings. Hey, if you don't want

anyone seeing what document you

d last, it's your own business.

Desktop

Remove all of those icons that

MS thinks you really need sitting on

the desktop! Although a handy option,

all too many times someone chooses

to remove the Network Neighborhood

from their desktop because frankly, if

you don't use it why have it there.

When you decide to add a local network

it would be a good idea to put it back

in its rightful place.

My Computer

Removes drives from being

displayed in My Computer.

Why would you do this?

Control Panel

Enables you to remove what is

shown in the Panel. It doesn't

remove the actual .cpl file just

it's presence. I have used this in

the past to prevent my children

from playing with the system and

deleting programs or running the

hardware wizard.

Network

This just enables you to logon

to your network without intervention.

This has caused me more problems

in the past than it was worth.

I leave this as is.

New

Allows you to add or remove

from the right-click context

menu. Be forewarned on removing

since you'll have to re-install

the software to regain its function.

Add/Remove

Another one that I've used to

prevent my kids from removing

programs through the control panel.

I found it was best to just block

out everything that can do damage

on the control panel and create

separate shortcuts to each.

Boot

Tools to bypass the function keys

during the boot-up process. Also

the ability to stop the Windows

splash screen from displaying.

If you hate Windows this much

but are still using it, we have

to talk! ;)

Repair

This is why I use Tweak UI in the

first place. It can repair associations,

rebuild icons, and repair system

files that were replaced by a

wayward program. There are

more complete ways to do this,

but for a quick fix I've found this

most useful since I am constantly

adding and removing software

packages and losing associations.

These will only reset to your Windows

default. For example, if you have

Adobe PhotoShopng Bitmap

files by default, this will reset it

to the Paint program supplied

with Windows.

Paranoia

My second favorite feature of

Tweak. Clear, clear and more

clear! Will erase just about any

trace of your existence on any of

the Windows features, including

files, IE history, last user,

network connection history,

and run history.

Things that happen behind your

back! That's what it says on this

tab, which includes auto start of data

and audio on insertion of a CD and

the ability to disable the two.

Overall

Believe me you can live

 without these tweaks.

They enhance various

aspects of Windows but aren't

all that necessary. Don't be

confused with

other utilities with similar names.

This is a Microsoft product.

I only missed it when I recently

re-installed Windows 98SE.

Rarely do I use it once I have

made my settings. The most use

I get is from the repair tab. It's

important to remember what you

did and where you did it so you can go

back and fix it.
